When I was in college, I watched a lot of shows on the Food Network. One of my favorites, of course, was Rachael Ray’s 30 Minute Meals. I don’t think that she was the first to ever mention it, but Rachael was a big proponent of Smell-O-Vision. As she blissfully chopped vegetables, seared meat and toasted bread, Rachael wanted her viewers at home to be able to smell what the kitchen was cookinggg. When I was starvin’ on a college budget, boy-oh-boy did I ever agree.
The prompt for Wednesday’s 5 for 5 theme at Momalom was Pictures, which in some odd way reminded me of the hours that I spent watching Rachael Ray. This is because, like the desire for a Smell-O-Vision, I also think that there is a strong need for a Sound-O-Picture — or the ability to hear memory-filled sounds that the picture was capturing.
I realize that this is what video cameras are all about. I get it, people. But, what I am imagining are a few snippets of noise – the birthday song, the waves crashing in the background, the uncontrollable laughter – that take you back to the moment.
After all, they say a picture is worth a thousand words. But, I think that most boil down to just one: LIFE. And, the life that I’ve come to know, the one that I love, is full of the living, the breathing, the laughing, the simple beautiful sounds that make this world go round. Wouldn’t it be nice to capture those with just one picture?
